The way we communicate with each other seems to be ever-changing. Email has been an effective way to communicate for some time, but it is hard to ignore that a whole new generation of kids and young adults are heads-down and finger tapping on their phone, sending what seems to be an inconceivable amount of text messages each month.

With the popularity and adoption of smartphones growing at an accelerated rate, I find myself looking for the quickest and most economical way to get a camp app in front of current and potential families and kids. In 2010, there were 296.6 million smartphone units sold, a 72.1% increase over 2009 according to a recent Gartner report on global smartphone sales. This volume along with many indications that people expect to use their mobile devices in place of traditional PCs (see our recent Orbitz report on mobile reservations) means those of us in the camping world need to start preparing.
Orbitz has released their travel outlook for 2011 along with a look back at 2010. It includes the common data from guest stays such as the busiest travel dates and top destinations. But the really interesting part is found deeper in the report. Coming in at number 4, guests will be looking for the ability to book vacations using a mobile device.
A major takeaway from this report for camps and conference centers is keeping up with technology. As smartphone and tablet use increases at exponential rates, people are expecting to use these devices to conduct business.

No doubt mobile computing is a big boon for camp and conference center operations. With the ruggedness of many camp facilities and the limited access to office space, mobile devices are a perfect solution. As camp professionals, we also tend to wear multiple hats causing us to spend very little time in a traditional office setting.
